I_lent_my_car_to_a_gal_that_lived_in_Chattanooga_
_____________________________________G
And_she_hadnt_ever_brought_it_back.__
_
She_was_drinkin_pretty_heavy,_when_I_let_her_have_it_
Hope_she_knows_it_was_only_a_loan_
Aint_no_tellin_what_I_might_have_told_her_back_at_the_time,_
But_that_old_car_was_also_my_home._
_
About_five_miles_out_I_was_gettin_kinda_tired_
Sweatin_hard_and_feelin_kinda_weak_
I_woke_up_with_no_cigarettes_or_nothin_to_drink_
And_I_hadnt_had_a_bite_to_eat._
_
My_nerves_was_so_quick_I_couldnt_tell_where_I_was_shakin_
Then_a_set_of_brakes_sang_my_song_
Some_fellow_stuck_his_head_out_a_51_Chevy_
And_hollered_"Hey_man,_come_on."_
_
I_tole_em_I_was_headin_down_to_Chattanooga_
They_said_hop_in,_were_goin_there_too_
And_the_way_they_took_off_in_a_cloud_of_smoke_
I_still_aint_believin_it_was_true._
_
They_had_their_windows_down,_and_I_was_sittin_in_the_back_
With_my_tongue_still_hung_in_my_throat_
He_was_hittin_just_about_a_hundred_and_ten__
And_he_said,_"Man,_what_you_think_of_this_boat?"_
_
Well,_there_was_two_semis_a-strugglin_up_ahead_
One_tryin_to_pass_the_other_
They_had_the_whole_road_blocked_so_he_passed_em_on__the_right_
And_let_me_tell_you_somethin_brother._
_
I_was_so_nervous_my_that_teeth_was_clickin__
There_wasnt_no_way_my_head_could_think_
Then_the_one_that_was_sittin_on_the_passenger_side__
Turned_and_said,_"Hey_man,_you_want_somethin_to__drink?"_
_
I_just_shook_my_head_cause_I_couldnt_talk_
He_said_OK_and_then_he_said_cheers_
Them_fools_was_drinkin_whiskey_and_wine_
And_chasin_it_down_with_beer._
_
Well,_I_started_sweatin_that_old_sticky_sweat_
And_I_know_I_was_white_as_a_sheet_
Then_one_turned_the_radio_on_wide_open_
And_said,_"Hey_man,_check_that_beat."_
_
By_the_time_we_reached_the_top_of_Monteagle_
I_thought_I_heard_a_rumblin_sound_
And_then_I_saw_a_sign_that_said_FALLIN_ROCK_
And_right_there_I_was_floorboard_bound._
_
I_was_rollin_and_squirmin_on_the_old_floorboard_
Too_weak_to_sit_or_stand_
And_then_the_driver_said_"Were_doin_a_hundred_and_twenty_
Look_here_man,_no_hands!"_
_
I_got_up_enough_nerve_to_raise_up_and_look_
By_now_there_couldnt_be_no_surprise,_
But_his_hair_was_blowin_all_over_my_face_
And_dandruff_blowed_in_both_eyes._
_
He_never_did_drive_on_the_right_or_left_
He_just_kept_on_ridin_that_line_
I_rubbed_my_eyes_and_saw_the_prettiest_thing_
The_Chattanooga_City_Limit_Sign._
_
He_slowed_down_and_I_said,_"Mister_please!_
Id_like_to_get_off_right_here"_
He_said,_"Aw,_ride_on_into_town_with_us_
Wee_gonna_go_down_n_pick_up_some_more_beer."_
_
I_said_please_once_more_and_he_stopped_the_car_
And_then_he_handed_me_my_sack_
Said_theyd_look_for_me_on_the_road_later_on_
(In)_Case_I_wanted_to_catch_a_ride_back._
_
I_got_out_and_sat_down_by_the_side_of_the_road_
Feelin_sick_and_lookin_mighty_pale_
I_dont_remember_anything_much_after_that_
But_next_mornin,_I_woke_up_in_jail._
_
I_didnt_know_anybody_in_my_cell,_
And_didnt_wanta_ask_why_I_was_there_
But_they_all_kept_grinnin_and_turnin_their_heads_
And_it_was_more_than_my_head_could_bear._

So_I_called_the_jailer_and_asked_him_to_tell_me_
