This_tab_is_a_basic_structure_for_playing_the_tune._Rev._Davis
recorded_the_tune_several_times_and_each_time_it_was_different,_
not_only_from_one_recording_to_the_next,_but_also_within_the_
same_recording_he_might_approach_the_verses,_bridges_or_
refrains_in_different_ways_each_time,_jumping_to_different_
voicings_and_inversions_of_the_G_and_C_chords_at_will._The_tab_
below_contains_many_of_the_voicings_and_structures_as_I_learned_
them_from_several_people_who_studied_with_Rev._Davis_in_person._
It_isnt_meant_to_be_an_exact_note-for-note_transcription_from_
any_one_particular_recording_of_the_tune,_but_just_an_example_
of_many_of_the_things_he_frequently_used_when_he_played_the_
tune._Keep_in_mind_Davis_was_a_street_musician_and_street_
preacher_and,_like_many_other_old-time_street-musicians,_his_
playing_style_reflected_that._He_used_a_powerful_"chunky"_style
with_the_intricacy_of_his_notes_secondary_to_the_power_and_
rhythmic_qualities_he_wanted_to_project._He_went_for_a_
"big-sound"_in_order_to_compete_with_the_typical_street_noise_
of_traffic_and_crowds_you_might_typically_hear_in_New_York_City_
where_he_played_in_the_latter_part_of_his_life._Also,_he_used_a_
12-string_which_was_generally_tuned_down_a_half_(or_whole)_step_
from_the_normal_standard_tuning_of_a_6-string_guitar_(which_I_
used_for_this_tab)_so_my_tab_is_"as_if"_played_in_the_key_of_G_
while_his_actual_recordings_would_be_in_the_true-key_of_Gb._I_
play_the_tune_myself_with_a_little_more_"noteyness"_than_Rev._
Davis,_and_a_bit_more_of_a_"roll"_than_his_"chunky"_style._But_
the_structure_and_figures_are_the_same._Use_this_tab_as_just_a_
framework_for_putting_the_tune_together,_and_then_play_it_in_
your_own_style_and_in_your_own_way._I_recorded_two_short_
